What is Medical Microdermabrasion (MDA)? Microdermabrasion is a mechanical form of skin exfoliation using a stream of abrasive diamond shaped crystals combined with suction. It exfoliates the upper layers of skin and stimulates collagen growth in the lower layers. The intensity can be varied to suit an individuals skin concerns from a light exfoliation to deep resurfacing. Consequently, you see an improvement in skin texture, more even colouring, fine lines, fewer breakouts, refined pores, renewed elasticity and a more youthful appearance.
What can MDA treat? • Ageing and sundamage • Acne and congestion • Rough or thickened skin • Scarring • Fine lines • General skin rejuvenation • Maintain your skins health
Contra-indications (reasons why MDA may not be suitable for you) • Roaccutane use in the last 6 months • Cystic acne • Recent sunburn • Very thin, crepey skin
How many sessions do I need? Microdermabrasion is designed to be performed as a course of treatments. Initially it is recommended you begin with five weekly sessions, however lines, scarring and other severe skin conditions will take many more regular sessions which will be discussed with you during your consultation. After your results have been achieved MDA can be performed every 4-6 weeks to maintain the benefits.
What does it feel like? Depending on the condition being treated, MDA can vary from a relaxing, mild abrasive sensation to quite an intense grazing for deeper, more stubborn conditions. Treatment intensities can be altered to your suit your individual comfort levels to ensure you are never too uncomfortable.
How does my skin look after the treatment? • Mild to moderate redness and sensitivity (similar to a sunburn) lasting 12 to 48 hours • Skin feels dry and tight • Some darkened areas of skin may occur (this is skin preparing to shed) • Varying amounts of flaking can occur approximately 3 days after your treatment • After the skin has shed it has a healthy glow and feels softer and smoother
Potential complications (intense/deep microdermabrasion treatments): • Crusting (this is the skin in preparation to exfoliate) lasting 2 to 7 days • Possible superficial bruising lasting 24 to 48 hours • Infection leading to a scar, if areas of crusting are not cared for correctly • Hyperpigmentation (darker patches of pigment on the skin) lasting 1 to 12 months
Patient After-Care for Microdermabrasion After your first microdermabrasion, there are a few simple steps for after care that you will need to follow:
Avoid the use of moisturisers or lotions containing active ingredients such as retinol, glycolic acids, perfumes and colours. Please use the moisturiser supplied to you for 3-7 days or until your skin is no longer sensitive. Thereafter, continue with your usual moisturises unless advised otherwise.
Your skin will also be a little more sensitive to the sun so keep sun exposure to a minimum. Please wear a hat and sunscreen daily. This should be a regular routine for you anyway!
Apply foundation as you wish.
Varying levels of crusting may develop in some areas. If so, please do not rub or pick the skin as this may lead to a scar.
If you have any concerns or questions please call the Practice.
Expected changes over the next 7 days include: Day 1 to 3 - Tight, dry skin with moderate redness and sensitivity and possibly some bruising
Day 2 to 5 - Possible areas of darkened skin (this is the old skin in preparation to peel)
Day 3 to 7 - Possible peeling or slight flaking lasting 2 to 5 days
